Heroes My Foot!
I spent 3 hours today watching Bravo count down 20 Ultimate Superheroes, Vixens and Villians. (20 of each, that is). The list was dissapointing becuase they kept going for characters from popular movies rather than what I would consider to be actual Ultimate Superheroes, Vixens and Villians. Another disturbing thing was that the reason they had "vixens" was that for the 20 females on the countdown, they had both superheroines and supervillianesses. Stupid. Then the villians were all male. I don't know why, but it's disturbing.
I guess for one thing, the "vixens" were all your typical big-breasted male sex fantasies and not actual women we can look up to. The exception to the big-breastedness was Buffy who, God bless her, is not overendowed in that area. Though she is achingly beautiful. Hmph.
Anyway, do we really agree that "THE MASK" is one of the Top 20 superheroes of all time? Or that "Bond Babes" should be Number Two in a countdown of Ultimate Vixens? They have stupid names and all they do is prance around in bikinis or have sex with that walking Vinereal Disease, James Bond. Shudder. It's sad when women are still looked as sex objects in the 21st century. Though I could have guessed that as all the old cartoons and sci fi movies would have us believe that in the future, women would still be sex objects only they'd be dressed in silver miniskirts and go-go boots.
Also, why was Wonder Woman only Number 8? What is the deal with that???? Wonder Woman was like the only woman girls could look up to in the male dominated world of superheroes! Sure, she was an amazon in a bustier but hey, she DID extract the truth from men (THE ULTIMATE HARDEST THING TO DO) and drive an invisible plane.
Xena made it onto the countdown as she is a butt-kicking warrior princess. But she was called "sexually ambigous". Was she really? I thought she was just hands-down gay. She is still to this day a lesbian icon. Sigourney Weaver was also featured for her role in "Aliens" and I recently found out watching Logo that in that role, she is a fantasy woman for lesbians.
Speaking of sexually ambiguous people, Batman was only number 3 or 4. Crazy! The Caped Crusader is Number One in many a books. Superman was Number 2 and Spider Man came in at Number One. I smell a rat as no one from DC was interviewed for the special but Stan Lee himself was there. Figures.
As for villians, Dracula was down at 19 which is nuts but Number One was Darth Vader. That works for me but why was Chucky in the countdown? He's just a doll!

I was also thoroughly disgusted and disgruntled by Bravo’s countdown choices, all of which were more of a celebration of pop culture and film influenced characters than a true list of ultimate superheroes, villains and vixens, its only redeeming quality was having Buffy so high in the list (don’t hate her because she’s beautiful,) except all credibility was shot by having the collective Bond girls as #2! Wtf? Contrary to popular belief, Wonder Woman was not the world’s first female super heroine, but in the triumvirate of power in DC lore, she comes right along with Batman and Superman. I’d have to disagree that all the female vixens were male fantasies, though the majority were. Storm of the X-Men for example, is considered an exotic beauty, but she is a natural born leader young ladies can emulate. I grant you that comics are an industry mostly catering and dominated by men but you should not condemn an entire industry by the majority’s narrow viewpoints.
As for the male choices: Indiana Jones is not a superhero, (by definition since he has no powers or even a costume like Batman) and neither is James bond though both may act heroic. Spider-Man over Superman? In what universe? Spidey maybe everyman (he is my favorite superhero) but superheroes wouldn’t even exist if it wasn’t for big blue, he’s the world’s first and in my opinion, will always be the best. The only reason Doctor Octopus, the Clown from Spawn and Dr. Doom made the countdown was because they have all been in recent films along with Hannibal Lecter, Freddy Krueger and others who should have been nowhere near it. In fact, I would have to consider any list of “ultimate villains” which is lacking Darkseid as almost laughable.

Who's Darkseid? All I know is that Dracula is a great supervillian who has been featured in not only books and horror movies but comedies, comic books, TV shows, blacksploitation films (Blacula) and just about anything else you can think of. And he was based on somebody real. Buffy fought him, Batman fought him, and Van Helsing fought him. Somebody that universal should be higher up than Number 19!

The Dracula I'm talking about is the fictional Count Dracula, the bloodsucking vampire who can hypnotize people and is charming but undead. The real Dracula, or Blad the Impaler, is where Bram Stoker got his "inspiration" but he is really nothing like Dracula. He loved the sight of blood because he was evil and he supposedly drank his enemies' blood but it wasn't like he needed it to live.
Lestat is not really a supervillian. He's just a dark character from a dark novel/movie, I feel.
