"My Metal Mania"

I am watching "Metal Mania" on VH1 Classic and it might be the deciding factor on keeping the cable- actually, satellite dish- around despite my money problems. I'm not sure I can give it up! (That and "Degrassi: the Next Generation") For those who read my blog about metal ("Metal Rules!") you are not surprised by this. I just cannot believe how much time has passed since these guys were considered cool.

I was reading in "Time" magazine that it is "surprising" that Democrats are at the forefront of the battle to keep violent and/or sexually explicit video games from the hands of children. Why is that surprising? Tipper Gore made life miserable for us metal fans in the 80s (and I suppose for rap fans too) by starting the PMRC and slapping our favorite records with those parental guidance stickers. She apparently was not very pleased with W.A.S.P.'s song "F*** Like a Beast". I guess it's not a lullaby. But W.A.S.P. is one of the reasons I love to watch "Metal Mania". I know that all these guys were kind of cheesy and some looked like poodles or were mulletheads. And of course they are sexist and all that but I loooove to re-live those good times! Tonight they played the original video for Danzig's 1988 "hit" entitled "Mother". (Sometimes they show "Mother '93" which is a live concert version). In the original the camera just focuses on Glenn Danzig's scowling face then shows terrified women dressed in typical "metal slut" gear (think Kelly Bundy and her peers when she went to those model auditions) and what may have been preparations for some sort of demonic ritual. There is a scene with a silhoute of a nude woman and someone is in front of her moving his "Nosferatu" arm toward her. It's supposed to be eerie I guess but I think it was either tounge-in-cheek or Danzig is pretty stupid.

On the other hand, there are also numerous videos I didn't get to see much in the 80s because they were not in heavy rotation. I heard the songs a lot on KNAC but the videos are sort of new to me.

I know it's sort of weird, especially for a Christian, but I watch "Metal Mania" every Saturday morning. Hopefully I'll still be able to get into heaven despite this terrible addiction.
