Oh, the Inhumanity!

I am so sickened by this awful dog-fighting ring case that has splashed all over the news of late! Of course it involves a famous athelete (allegedly) and that is why it is Big News. Unfortunately, sometimes it takes the celebrity angle for people to care about something. I am a cat lover and I much rather own a cat (or be owned by one) than a doggie but I am still horrified by some of the details that have come out. I won't even repeat them as they are too stomach-turning and infuriating for me to have on this here blog-o'-mine, which is mostsly frivilous.

Some people think that a guy who didn't committ a crime "directly" isn't as criminally responsible for said crime but if this guy had an illegal dog-fighting ring operation taking place on his property, and worse, if he sanctioned it, to me he should be doing hard time despite his not being the one to put the dogs to death by his own hand. I mean, I always joke that I wouldn't be afraid of Charles Manson if I saw him in a dark alley because he didn't kill anyone himself--I'd be more afraid of Squeaky Frome or Tex Watson--but of course I think he's guilty as sin! He is the one who got these people to go out there and carve that baby out of Sharon Tate's belly. He's a madman and a killer, though he maybe never laid a hand on anyone.

Anyway, I feel that someone running this type of operation is a serial killer. He or she didn't just kill one dog but dozens. Maybe a dog's life isn't "as valuable" as human being's but I don't think six years--which is apparently the maximum the culprit will serve--is enough. I think he should do at least fifteen. No one should be allowed to get away with doing this to defenseless animals. Sure, we don't normally consider pit bulls "defenseless" but they are against depraved sociopaths with no conscience like those involved in this most haneous of cases.

If Vick is responsible or guilty of what they say he did he does deserve to be thrown in the slammer. Some people say that they should terminate his contract for tarnishing the league's image before the opening of training camp. I don't know if he's guilty or not, though it appears that the evidence is piling, but I wonder if all these editorialists calling for his head are vegetarians. The slaughtering of animals, albeit not for henious and malicious reasons, happens all the time in this country but like spleengrrl says, at least this will place the limelight on stopping this type of thing from going on. Maybe one good thing will come out of this whole mess

I don't think they are vegetarians- I'm not. Though I think that the way some animals are killed for meat is pretty inhumane. I used to be a vegetarian and part of me REALLY REALLY wants to go back to that but unfortunately I am anemic and need meat. I sometimes actually CRAVE steak. Pretty sad.

I love animals, like the ones we have as pets: cats, dogs, etc.

I also love animals, like the kind we eat: squid, salmon, cows (yummy steaks!!!), pigs (yummy bacon, pork chops...), pollo, etc.

Someone offered me a kitten, neutered, for $20. Unfortunately (as you can gather from the word "neutered") it's a boy cat. I want a girl, darn it! But they've already sold all the girls. At least he's all-black and I wanted an all-black cat. (Or a Russian Blue or a black with white underside and "boots" or a girl Calico.)

Yeah, we all know all the action is really in cockfighting. But seriously, folks, the only state in the US that allows cockfighting is Louisiana and recently, the governor just signed into a law banning it there too. It goes into effect in August of this year so you only have about a week left of being able to see it legally. Even though it's gross, I think there is something in people that craves to see that kind of violence. Like the coliseums in Rome to cricket matches in China. Men just like to sit around and watch things fight each other. It's so very Fight Clubish.

Also, I second your choice about female calicos. Norah is one and she's very loving and pleasant.

Makes me sick too. I'm somewhat concerned about how these crimes will be punished. I'm for huge fines, and therapy -- like drug and alcohol crimes. They should have to work many hours in animal shelters, providing care for abused and abandoned animals.

I'd hate to see people punished more for dog fighting than for violent crimes against people. I keep thinking that the NFL dude is in big trouble and f'd himself big time. His whole career will go down the tubes for this. Kind of crazy.

Strays and neglected animals are a big concern for me too. I think people should have to neuter/spay their pets, as unwanted animals make up the bulk of "kills" or "putting down" if you will.
