Is it Just Me???
Things that make you go Hmmm...
I'm all for free speech and I feel that if someone wants to be (in my opinion) stupid and blaspheme (thereby really asking for God's wrath) that's their (again, my personal opinion) stupid problem.
But something I read in a Catholic website (keep in mind, I am not Catholic) really spoke to me. It read that the remarks comedian Kathy Griffin made at a an Emmy ceremony were taken too lightly by the attendees. The writer of the article in this Catholic website said that if Kathy Griffin had made comments against the prophet Mohammed or Islam in general that there would have been a completely different reaction than there was to her "Jesus can suck it!" quip at the awards. (I feel horrible just writing that.)
I agree. I don't care what Kathy Griffin thinks, especially because I'm not stupid and I know she did to get a rise out of people, to get notoriety, to get off the D-List, whatever...I personally will just never support her again- same as I've done with others who have said something against God, even if it can be called "an innocent joke" such as writers for "The Simpsons" (which USED to be my favorite show but I have not watched now in about five or six years), writers for "Sex and the City" and countless others. This is not going to affect any of them adversely, they won't have even noticed I am sure, and maybe they feel proud of having turned off a Christian viewer forever; but that is not what I'm writing about here, make no mistake about it.
The point is that a lot of supposedly brave people who want to take on "the establishment" and see that as being a right wing Christian establishment like to earn brownie points with the Hollywood mafia by saying disgusting things about Jesus or God (the God of the Bible, that is, not Buddha or some other more revered and less hated god) but you won't catch these "brave" and oh-so-in-your-face folks making remarks about Islam and its prophet. You can catch Madonna kissing saints and writhing on the floor with rosaries and hanging from a cross but you won't catch the immarterial girl (who dares to take on the name of Esther, a righteous and TRULY BRAVE woman) doing anything that would upset the Muslim community. Oh no! Not beyond being herself which is of course offensive to their sensibilities as the lifestyles of a lot of Western and otherwise irreligious (non-Muslim) women must seem.
I am frankly very sick of these people who want to "stick it" to the likes of Jesus, who died for them and never mind that, who lived for truth and love and righetousness because he's an easy target for them. But that's fine- they have a first amendment right to do so. I just wish that the next time people are expected to apologize for offending a race of people (black people, Jews, et al) or a sexual orientation of people, those who fire them from their TV shows or ban their films will remember this standard when hiring, giving accolades and awards to and otherwise rewarding those who take what is sacred and holy and most important to a group of people and step on it and smear it and flush it down the toilet without a care.
Now I must go pray for God to forgive that horrible woman....

Kathy G. makes me cry with her softness -- her dad died, she reached out to women in prison, etc. Her statement was thoughtless, and I can't believe she meant it to hurt anyone or to curse God.
What do you think about Sarah Silverman? She's offensive for sure to Muslims, African Americans, and Christians. I would boycott her, but she's kind of funny. My solution -- I don't go out of my way to see her on tv, and I certainly wouldn't pay money to see her (unless she had a supporting role in a movie I really want to see).

That's what I like about Sarah Silverman. she is no holds barred offensive, including with wher own people. But I agree with you Spleengrrrl. There is definately a sick tolerance to offend and make fun of Christianity and Catholicism (perhaps because it is the "dominant" faith out there). However, if you make a public offensive statement about Jews or Muslims, even Scientologist you will be expected to make a public apology and will have all these different groups hounding your ass!

I'm not sure about the Scientologist remark because they get made fun of QUITE A LOT. It's gotten to the point that I get offended FOR them, trying to see it from their point of view. As for Sarah Silverman, I want to tar and feather her, Rafi knows....
Catholics, I think, people want to repay for the Inquisition, the mean nuns who rapped them across the knuckles in the name of Baby Jesus and most recently, the unforgivable cover-ups of child molestations. So they get it pretty bad too. Next time you find yourself laughing at Catholics, remember to say 10 Our Fathers & 10 Hail Mary's...;) j/k
