Katrina Response
Watching the news and seeing the devastation of Hurricane Katrina has been such a depressing experience, especially knowing that a lot of that mess could have been prevented.
One thing I have read about, though, is that fundamentalist "Christians" are saying that the hurricane, being an act of God as it is, was deserved because of the sin of New Orleans. Obviously, that is a horrible thing to say, especially while the wounds are fresh. And I don't blame people for being disgusted by it...
Still, hopefully we won't use these people's obvious misrepresentations of Christianity and Jesus' teachings to fuel more hatred in the world.
I mean, Hindus believe the same thing but we respect their beliefs. Yes, they do! KARMA! The law that says if something bad happens to you it is deserved, which is why there aren't Hindu charities (as such)- you can't mess with someone's bad karma, they need to work it out to grow and one day reach Nirvana. And Buddhists? Well, since this is all an illusion, there is no interest. It's been remarked by Buddhists that this is something they can learn from Christians (charity).
As for the real teachings of Christ, his disciples once asked him, regarding a man born blind, whose sin was responsible for his blindness- his own or his parents. Jesus replied that no one's sin was to blame either in his case or in the case of a disaster where people died in an accident.
Meanwhile, Christian charities are always the first to respond with love, kindness, and action in tragedies like Katrina. Watching CNN just now, they put up a screen of places to call for aid and they were ALL- evry one of them- Christian-based charities, including Presbyterian and Nazarene, to name a few of the denominations.
So please, realize that ignorance is out there and it's ugly. But it's best not to give in to our own hatred and prejudice because then, what have we accomplished?

True. Even the Taliban has been quoted as saying the same thing, that New Orleans or the U.S. deserved this...blah blah. We know this is not the position of all Muslims. I believe that even though there exists a few ignorant, intolerant folks out there OF ALL PERSUASIONS, most human beings are kind and compassionate, like our very own Ms. Spleengrrl.
